March 27 A Double Horror BillI have had the best weekend because E Bay has afforded me 2 of the finest 1960's horror films. I am the proud owner of 'The Frozen Dead' (1966) starring Dana Andrews and *shuffles on seat with excitement* 'It' (1966) starring Roddy Mc Dowell.
The memories they bring back are priceless.
It's 1971 and because I work very odd hours in a special school in Surrey, my evenings rarely begin before 10pm. My friend Joyce is in the same boat - being in the same buisness - sometimes we make it to the pub for a last hour, sometimes we are just too tired to do anything other than call round for a coffee, a natter and a catch up with the gossip. However, on Saturdays, the Classic Cinema in East Grinstead have a double midnight horror bill and Joyce and I and occasionally a few others are usually there. On this particular Saturday evening we realised that there was probably only 6 people in total in the auditorium and the above mentioned films were showing. 'The Frozen Dead' was first and as it progressed we both found ourselves curled up into the seat for fear of the dreaded something touching our legs. We duly frightened ourselves silly the cinema having so few customers had a silent and eerie feel to it, - and then came 'It'. Our sensibilities were so heightened by this time that the absolute daftness of this film sent us into hysterical laughter, we were eventually approached and asked to keep quiet which only increased our mirth, but we didn't actually get thrown out. When it was all over we came out into the 1.00am silence of East Grinstead and walked to the car park opposite where I had parked my cherished green mini van.
We worked at Lingfield which is a good 15 minute drive from East Grinstead, but that night I made it back in 7 minutes! The first odd thing we noticed was that there was a light glowing from inside the van, this turned out to be my radio which was switched on, the second thing was my rear view mirror had turned 180 degrees. I knew for a fact that I had not left the radio on and certainly the mirror was moved, well, we both just stood there for ages until eventually we jumped in and I drove like a bat out of hell never looking in the offending mirror once in case there was something lurking in the rear of the van.
Having parked the van we flew into my flat to find my boyfriend (at the time) and another of the staff absolutly falling about in hoots at their prank. Knowing we were going there, they had come into the cinema after us, seen us but stayed near the back so they could leave early, and with my spare car key they did their bad deed then sped off in their car. Bad boys!
Amazingly, I have never ever seen either of these films on release since , in the cinema, on TV or to buy. I have of course regaled this tale to 'the bairn', and she called me last week to say that both were on ebay, and so that was me on a mission. So the bairn and I are going to Joyce's house soon for a double bill. What will we think after all of these years? I'll keep you posted.
Regards B March 24 Kneading handsToday has been as miserable weather wise as yesterday was good. So
instead of taking the planned trip to Newcastle to wander the town we
decided to bake! It turns out that John has a very good pair of
kneading hands. This I have actually suspected for some time. I pulled
my shoulder a few months back and he was kind (?) enough to give me a
massage. To say that he nearly squeezed the life out of my poor muscles
would be an understatement - and I have to say a dissapointment - he
just doesn't have the firm gentle touch - he has the kneading dough
touch. The bread? excellent. We do have a bread maker and it's OK but
does anyone else have the same problem as us in getting the dough hook
thingy out of the bread without leaving a gaping hole? Anyway, now John
has realised a new talent I shall be encouraging it for all it's worth. Regards B March 22 BooksI really am enjoying having time to read again. While I was working I would frequently wake up at 2.30am with my book collapsed onto my face and my specs askew, I rarely got past the first paragraph before I was asleep. Now I sometimes waken in the night and luxuriate in the fact that I can read for a while without the worry of being too tired for work the next day. It's also great to spend as long as I like in one of my favorite places, the library. I have an eclectic taste in books, although I draw the line at Mills and Boon, (though I have seen the day) so I have put a list in my space of the books I have read over the past few months which I have particulary enjoyed, some are re-reads, like The Power of One which I never tire of and in fact I would reccomend all of Bryce Courtney's books.
I love poetry too and I am currently enjoying 'Rapture' by Carol Ann Duffy. And because I worked in the Lake District for a while and walked my legs off every spare minute I was there, I love browsing through Wainwright books now that I really can't do those long walks anymore, they bring back very happy memories.
Talk later. Love B
March 15 Just when you think...!Thank you all for your kind comments about the 'girls night out'. Just
when I thought what a rotten world this is sometimes, my faith has
again been restored. Suzanne called Christine (my daughter, aka 'the
bairn') today with the most remarkable tale. In the post today she
received a well wrapped parcel, and in it was her purse complete with
all of her cards and cash and the precious ID. There was a short note
which just said: 'I can't believe
anyone would be so daft as to go into town with this lot on them. I
found your purse so I am returning it to you'. There was no name and no address but absolutly everthing was there. How remarkable is that? Great eh? Had a busy busy day again today. More hospital appointments with relatives this morning (I know the inside of our local general hospital like the back of my hand now). Then a long walk this afternoon with my health walk chums, we walked further than usual today and up some pretty stiff gradients....didn't stop the jaws however, and made the visit to the pub at the end all the more enjoyable. Talk again B x March 12 organisedAs some of you may know I have a daughter of 25. She works hard
and I have to say plays hard too. On Friday evening she and a friend
decided to have a girl's night out in town (Newcastle). The pair of them had really enjoyed the evening and at 2am had decided to have a last drink before heading on home, when Chris's friend Suz went to the counter to order last drinks she discovered that her bag had been dipped and her cash was missing. Chris came to the rescue, to find that she had also been robbed. They went to the bouncers who said that the police would want to speak to them because they were only two of a stack more that evening. It seems that there is a very smooth operation going on in newcastle, the operaters moving from one club/pub to another leaving a wake of robberies in their path. Thank God the girls were not harmed in any way, but that is no reason to be complacent about such matters. Suzanne had all of her ID stolen, she is going for a very important interview this week at which she has to produce ID, also stolen was her credit/debit card. Fortunatly all Chris had stolen was cash. Neither of them can think of any time when they were nudged or knocked against, so these are very skilled theives who know exactly what they are doing. It obviously doesn't matter to these people that others work hard for their money and it really sickens me that others can cream it off so easily. Grr! Talk later. B March 08 ScalpedWhat is is about hairdressers that makes them go into scalping mode
with no more encouragement than the customer saying they want a good
tidy up? And why is it that Dame Judy Dench looks great when they do it
to her, wheras, I look like I have just been let out of Holloway at the
stroke of 9am this mornin? I'm off out this evening with some friends,
so lots of dangley things to compensate I think! I heard on the radio on the way home that Tony Blair was supporting the health of the NHS even though it is obviously dying on it's feet. My sister in law has a lot of health problems, and this morning we went to attend an out patient appointment. Hospital, 7 miles away, parking fee £1.50 , and the reason they sent her the appointment? To give her a letter to take to the Xray department to make an appointment to come in for an Xray. Now then, is it me? - Because that was the biggest waste of time, and a great effort for my sister in law also who thought she was going to see a consultant. Steam comes from ears - and with my hair you can see it very easily too! Talk later B March 03 Not Even the spirit is willingMostly I think good of people, so when my blog friend Lesley's little
cat Bella went missing on Tuesday I really thought that seeing she had
posted loads of descriptions of her in the neighbourhood and put
posters on lamp posts etc that everyone would feel as we would, that at
the very least we would keep an eye out for the cat and take down the
number just in case we spotted her. I know that J and I have done that
loads of times in our area for both lost dogs and cats. Sadly, some
sicko last night used the situation to get a gratuitous kick out of
calling Lesley and telling her he had found the cat and when she asked
did it have any distinguishing marks he said yes it has a big wet red stripe
down it's belly, thinking this was hilarious he then hung up. On Wednesday we went out with our friends on a Gateshead Health Walk and one of the group was in tears as she related that the swans on a lake we pass on a regular walk had both been shot and had been killed. This was a new pairing and this would have been their first year as a breeding pair, and we all eagerly looked forward to the event. Cruelty in whatever form is gross cowardice. For whatever reason the perpatrator has to hurt to get some satisfaction in their sad personal life. The satisfaction must be short lived consequently the next cruel act has to be equal to or worse than the last. Lesley we all hope and pray little posh Bella returns soon, safe and sound, and that you have no more horrible calls. March 01 Happy St David's DayTo any Welsh blog readers, Happy St David's Day, sadly no Daffies out
in our garden but I do have a leek with which I shall make some soup! It is of course also Ash Wednesday and I stood in line with a school of children under 11 to receive my ashes this morning. I love watching the kids in church as the ashes dry out on their foreheads, they all start making faces and wrinkling up their eyes to see who can displace the dry ash first. We have a very overwieght cat called Poo Bah, he has a nifty trick. Some mornings before we wake naturally, he jumps up onto the radio alarm - where the controls are on the top - plonks his fat bottom down on the 'sleep' button - which gives 59 minutes of radio - then waits until we are fully awake before hanging one on my head in an attempt at getting me out of bed to feed him. Today we had one of these early calls. Because of course he can't read the time, he was a shade early and hit the button at 5.59am. What was obviously a trailer, was running on Radio 4, and I, for no sensible reason whatsoever nearly fell out of bed laughing as the first thing I heard was, "At this time 3,000,000 Bison roamed the earth". Now I know what you are thinking, this is not even remotley funny, possibly you just had to be there, but even as I write it now I am bouncing up and down with mirth. It was just so random. Probably says a lot about me does that! |
